Donkey Cemetery

Ok so we didn't really go to a donkey cemetery- it was actually a donkey sanctuary but I kept calling it the wrong thing. It was a really nice day for a walk around this haven for neglected "Eeyores" (as Eoghan liked to call them). I learned something interesting about donkeys today. Apparently all donkeys are born with a dark cross on their back (you can kind of see it in the picture); the theory is that donkeys have the crosses because Mary rode a donkey in to Bethlehem to deliver Jesus. I really liked that idea.

Last night was a lot of fun. It was another late night of going to bed at some unheard of hour, but Kieran was very surprised and the party was fun. All of their siblings and close family friends were there, so it was the perfect opportunity for me to meet everyone I've been hearing about for so long. Gillian got him a cake in the shape of a Murphy's pint. It reminded me a lot of something you would see on Ace of Cakes back home. Kieran doesn't like sweets, so we actually never even cut into it- its being saved for a little family birthday lunch we're having tomorrow.

This morning I slept in a little bit, but woke up to lots of farming going on in the field across the street. William was up there in the silage harvester. Eoghan was, of course, beside himself to see all the tractors at work! We walked up to watch them and William invited Eoghan and me up for a ride. The machine we were in was basically collecting grass clippings (it was recently mowed), chopping them up, and shooting them into a trailer that would ride along beside the harvester. The clippings are then preserved until the winter and becomes "silage". Silage is what cows eat in the winter when most of the grass is dead. It was not quite as smooth of a ride as the combine last weekend, but it was fun. Their A/C is also broken, so it was getting really hot in there. The weather has been so nice lately that all the farmers are trying to make the most of the warm, dry spell. William said they were out cutting hay until 12:30 last night and then were up at 5 this morning. Glad I'm not a farmer! I may go up and learn how to milk a cow tomorrow afternoon though (if the weathers still nice).

  1. It is neat you are getting to ride all the farm equipment. We'll have a hard time impressing the Fordes when they visit us. Too bad we gave away the baseball wagon and the Lumina. I cant think of anything else we have that matches what you are doing there.
